King Edward VI School - Mathematics

Mathematics

Our Mathematics Department is always willing to give their time to support our students.

The Mathematics department is the largest in the School, yet it fosters a strong sense of community among both staff and students. At GCSE, we follow the Edexcel Higher Tier specification, with the option to enhance learning through the AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics qualification. Additionally, students can choose to study GCSE Statistics, which provides valuable insights into data analysis and its applications in subjects such as Geography, Economics, Psychology, and Science.

At A Level, we follow the Edexcel specification, covering topics in Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, and Statistics. Students looking to extend their studies can opt for Further Mathematics, which counts as an additional A Level. This course explores advanced concepts in pure mathematics and decision mathematics.

For those who want to enhance their mathematical skills without taking a full A Level in Mathematics, we offer a one-year Core Mathematics course in Year 12. This qualification can help lower entry requirements for university courses that include mathematical components.

All students in Years 7 to 11 take part in the UKMT Maths Challenges, with Sixth Form students able to opt in. These competitions help develop problem-solving skills, encourage a healthy sense of competition, and strengthen students’ UCAS profiles. Many students progress to follow-on rounds such as the Olympiad and Kangaroo, and there are also opportunities to represent the School in Team Mathematical Challenges.

We also provide a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, including Ritangle, Náboj, and the National Cypher Challenge. The Maths & Physics Society provides students with the opportunity to present on a field of expertise and the chance to hear from outside speakers who present on various specialist subjects.

We offer tailored courses to support A Level students preparing for university admissions tests such as STEP, MAT, TMUA, and other assessments related to Physics and Engineering.
